A centurion there had a slave whom he valued highly, and who was ill and close to death. When he heard about Jesus, he sent some Jewish elders to him, asking him to come and heal his slave. Jesus went with them, but when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to say to him, “Lord, do not trouble yourself, for I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.”
from Luke 7:1-10
If haven’t brushed up on your first-century military terminology lately, a centurion was an officer in the Roman army who commanded a “century” of about 100 men. His rank made him more or less equivalent to a captain in the modern military system. So, he was a pretty big deal. And, as a member of the Roman ruling class, he would have learned from birth that he was superior to the Jews in the occupied territory in which he lived. So what on earth prompts him to tell Jesus that he’s “not worthy” to receive him? Join us on Sunday as Pastor Curt preaches faith, healing, authority, humility, and who we are when we come before God.
