Sometimes religious people think that it’s all about the rules. Do this. Don’t do that. Here’s a sin, there’s a sin, everywhere a sin, sin. Rules themselves aren’t bad, but when it becomes more about the rule itself and less about the reason for the rule we can run into some trouble. In this week’s reading the prophet Jeremiah declares that the covenant between God and God’s people is not about external rules. It’s about what’s in our hearts.
